Basic Handgun Safety Course
This class meets the requirements for Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit. It also satisfies the NRA’s requirement for Phase 2. This is a comprehensive class that covers everything you need to know, including rules for firearm safety, criteria for selecting a handgun, loading and unloading, clearing malfunctions, fundamentals of marksmanship, legal aspects, ammunition, storage, and more. There is a written test at the end of the classroom portion, after which students transition to the range to reinforce classroom material with hands-on experience including both dry-fire and live-fire exercises. One of our professional instructors will stand beside you to provide feedback, and offer assistance and tips for improvement. You do not have to have your own gun but it is encouraged. Eye and ear protection are provided for those that don’t bring their own. At the conclusion, the student will be awarded a certificate of completion, which can be used to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit at the circuit court in the jurisdiction where they live.
This course requires a Concealed Handgun Permit. Topics include legality of carrying your firearm, methods of concealed carry, spare magazines, ID, loading and unloading, drawing your firearm while carrying concealed, and safety and marksmanship skill development. This course is approximately three hours.
Intro to Tactical Handgun
Some experience with firearms is required for this course. This course will include moving and shooting, shooting at multiple targets, shooting from multiple positions and from behind barricades, dominant- and non-dominant-hand shooting, loading and reloading, and other tactical skills. A gun and two magazines are required for this course. This course will invoke stress in some students. This course is approximately four hours.
Private Shooting Lessons
These lessons are designed for students who may or may not already have a Concealed Carry Permit but who want to become more familiar and more accurate with their particular firearm. Contact us to schedule range time with an instructor. Private lessons start at $50/hour. RCTA also offers semi-private and small-group lessons.

(Self-Protection, Empowerment, and Knowledge) is a comprehensive self-defense program that covers not only physical self-defense techniques, but also the fundamentals of a safety-oriented mindset. Our courses address key factors in assault prevention, such as verbal self-defense, environmental awareness, safety in public, and safe dating. From hands-on techniques classes to lecture-style courses on a variety of sub-topics, S.P.E.A.K. will enable you to live with confidence and awareness. We offer group lessons at our facility, as well as one-on-one training. We also offer corporate courses to be held on-site. These classes can be offered as all-inclusive or women’s-only.
